If you are typing Mandarin on a computer or phone, turn on a Chinese input source and let it produce punctuation alongside the characters. Use for a pause, to separate items in a list, to end a sentence, and or for questions and exclamations. Use Chinese quotation marks “ ” for quoted speech and 《 》 for titles. On Windows Microsoft Pinyin, Ctrl + . toggles Chinese and English punctuation. On a Mac, Apple provides Chinese Pinyin input and a punctuation window; on Android, Gboard lets you add a Chinese layout and switch languages from the space bar. For HSK 2–4 practice, type complete messages such as 你明天有空吗? and 我买了苹果、面包和水。 Then check each mark and the sentence around it, not just your speed. That distinction turns punctuation from a formatting detail into another small part of Chinese output you can retrieve and correct.

The punctuation marks you need first

You do not need to memorise every symbol before you can write useful Chinese. Start with the marks that appear in ordinary messages and short notes:

MarkCommon jobExample
Separates parts of a sentence or shows a pause我今天很忙,晚上再聊。
Separates items in a list我买了苹果、面包和水。
Ends a statement我明天去学校。
Ends a question你几点到?
Shows strong feeling or emphasis太好了!
Introduces an explanation, list, or quotation我有一个问题:你有空吗?
Separates closely related clauses我负责联系老师;你负责准备材料。
“ ”Marks quoted speech or a quoted phrase他说:“明天见。”
《 》Marks a book, film, or other titled work我在看《西游记》。
( )Adds a short aside or clarification周五(不是周四)见。

The Unicode Consortium lists as the ideographic comma used to separate items in a Chinese list, while is the fullwidth comma used to indicate a pause. Practising complete sentences makes this small distinction easier than memorising the marks alone.

Chinese comma or list comma: vs.

This is the most useful distinction to learn first.

Use when the sentence continues after a pause:

  • 如果你有时间,我们一起吃饭。 — If you have time, let’s eat together.
  • 我今天要上班,晚上才能回复。 — I have to work today, so I can only reply in the evening.
  • 他到了,但是还没进来。 — He has arrived, but he has not come in yet.

Use when you are listing similar items:

  • 我会说中文、英语和一点日语。 — I speak Chinese, English, and a little Japanese.
  • 请带护照、手机和充电器。 — Please bring your passport, phone, and charger.
  • 我们星期一、三、五练习。 — We practise on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The list comma does not mean that every list must use . In a casual chat, people sometimes separate short items with ordinary commas, and names or long phrases may need a clearer structure. The practical goal for a learner is to notice the relationship between the pieces: a pause inside one sentence is different from a sequence of parallel items.

Use and to show the message shape

Punctuation makes the shape of a Chinese message easier to scan. Compare these versions:

  • 你今天晚上有空吗?
  • 你今天晚上有空吗

Both are understandable. The first makes the question explicit and is the better target for a sentence-typing exercise. A short chat reply may omit the final mark, but longer messages benefit from a clear ending.

Use after a statement:

  • 我已经把文件发给你了。 — I have sent you the file.
  • 明天早上八点见。 — See you at eight tomorrow morning.

Use after a direct question:

  • 你为什么不来? — Why are you not coming?
  • 这个多少钱? — How much does this cost?

In ordinary Chinese text, is the clean match for the surrounding Hanzi. If a platform changes the shape automatically, recognise the difference without letting it interrupt your practice.

Quotation marks, titles, and parentheses

Chinese uses punctuation to make quoted material and titles easy to identify, especially in messages about classes, books, films, or something another person said.

Quoted speech: “ ”

Use quotation marks when you repeat a person’s words:

老师说:“下周要考试。”

Keep the pair consistent and put the final inside the quotation when the quoted sentence itself is complete.

Titles: 《 》

Use angle-style book-title marks around the name of a book, film, song, or other work:

我很喜欢电影《你好,李焕英》。

The title has its own comma, while the full sentence ends after the closing title mark. Type the title as a short visual unit, then return to the sentence around it.

Parentheses: ( )

Parentheses are useful for a correction or a small clarification:

我们星期六(不是星期日)见。

Matching fullwidth parentheses usually look more balanced with Hanzi. If the message is clear, send it and make the mark a review item later.

How to switch Chinese punctuation on common keyboards

The exact shortcut depends on your input method, so check the input mode before blaming your Pinyin.

Windows Microsoft Pinyin

Microsoft’s current Simplified Chinese IME documentation lists these shortcuts:

  • Press Shift to switch between English and Chinese mode.
  • Press Shift + Space to switch character width between fullwidth and halfwidth.
  • Press Ctrl + . to switch between Chinese and English punctuation.

If a period, comma, or question mark looks wrong, press Ctrl + . once and type the mark again. The shortcut only works in Chinese mode; Microsoft says the key settings can be managed in Microsoft Pinyin settings.

macOS Chinese input

Apple’s Chinese Input Method guide explains how to add Chinese, Simplified and select an input source such as Pinyin. Once the source is enabled, you can type Chinese characters and use the input menu for punctuation. Apple also documents a punctuation window opened from the Input menu or with Option-Shift-B when you need a symbol that is not easy to find on the keyboard.

For daily practice, switch to Pinyin, type the whole sentence, and use the punctuation window only when the mark itself is the target. Searching for every symbol interrupts recall.

Android Gboard

Google’s Gboard instructions say to open Languages, add a keyboard, choose the language and layout, and then switch languages by holding the space bar. The menu wording may change slightly between Android versions, so focus on the stable idea: add Chinese as an input language before you start a typing session.

Other Chinese keyboards are fine too. MandarinReps is not tied to one IME; the learning target is the sentence you can produce and revise.

A five-step Chinese punctuation typing drill

Punctuation is easy to recognise when it is already on the screen. To make it part of active output, hide the Chinese answer and type from meaning.

  1. Read the English prompt and decide whether it is a statement, question, list, or quotation.
  2. Say the Mandarin sentence quietly or recall its Pinyin.
  3. Turn on Chinese input and type the complete sentence, including the final mark.
  4. Check the punctuation category: pause, list, sentence ending, question, or quoted material.
  5. Rewrite only the part you missed, then create one new sentence with the same pattern.

Try these prompts:

  1. Are you free tomorrow afternoon?你明天下午有空吗?
  2. I bought apples, bread, and water.我买了苹果、面包和水。
  3. I am busy today, so I will reply tonight.我今天很忙,晚上再回复。
  4. The teacher said, “Please review chapter two.”老师说:“请复习第二课。”
  5. We will meet on Saturday (not Sunday).我们星期六(不是星期日)见。
  6. This is my question: when does class start?这是我的问题:课几点开始?

Combine this drill with the real-message sentence practice loop. The point is to decide what the sentence is doing while you produce it, not to type punctuation in isolation.

Common mistakes and sensible limits

Using an English comma for every pause

and look similar, but a list is different from a pause between clauses. Review the sentence, not just the character.

Mixing Chinese and English punctuation without a reason

In a message containing URLs, email addresses, code, or an English product name, halfwidth punctuation may be correct for that Latin segment. Do not change an email address into Chinese punctuation.

Accepting the first keyboard result

An IME predicts candidates from context, but it cannot decide what you mean every time. If you typed a list, check for ; if you typed a question, check for ; if you quoted someone, check that the pair is complete.

Optimising speed before accuracy

Typing speed is useful only after the output is readable and correct enough for its purpose. A slow sentence with the right structure gives you a better review target than a fast sentence with punctuation you never noticed.

FAQ

Is Chinese punctuation different from English punctuation?

Some marks have corresponding fullwidth or CJK forms, and has a distinct role as an ideographic comma for lists. In a Chinese sentence, and usually fit the visual rhythm of the Hanzi better than their halfwidth English counterparts. Digital messages can mix scripts, so use the mark that matches the text you are actually writing.

Do I need to use fullwidth punctuation in every text message?

No. A short chat can still be understood if punctuation is missing or a platform uses a different shape. For learning, however, practising and helps you produce complete written sentences. For URLs, email addresses, code, and other Latin strings, preserve the punctuation those formats require.

How do I type Chinese punctuation on Windows?

With Microsoft Pinyin in Chinese mode, press Ctrl + . to switch between Chinese and English punctuation. If the result is still wrong, check that you are using the intended input source and that the candidate window is closed before moving on. Shortcuts can vary in other IMEs.

A short routine for the next seven days

Spend five minutes a day on one punctuation pattern:

  • Day 1: statements with
  • Day 2: direct questions with
  • Day 3: clause pauses with
  • Day 4: lists with
  • Day 5: quotations with “ ”
  • Day 6: titles or clarifications with 《 》 and ( )
  • Day 7: mix the patterns in three real-message prompts

Before adding a new sentence, review the one mark you missed yesterday. This keeps punctuation attached to meaning and sentence structure. If you want the broader method behind that approach, read the sentence-level Mandarin typing guide and the practical guide to learning Chinese by typing.
