The easiest way to type Chinese numbers is to identify what the number means before you enter it. Dates normally move from year to month to day, clock time uses 点 and 分, prices often use 元 or the conversational 块, and phone numbers are read digit by digit. Once you know the category, type the whole phrase—not an English-shaped translation—and check the Chinese unit after the number.

For HSK 2–4 learners, this matters because numbers often appear inside otherwise familiar messages. You may know the words for “tomorrow,” “meeting,” and “expensive,” yet still hesitate over 2026年9月13日, 下午三点半, or 三十块. This guide turns those patterns into a small, repeatable Chinese typing workout.

First, decide what kind of number you are typing

Chinese does not use one single reading strategy for every number in a message. Ask what the number is doing:

| Message type | Useful pattern | Example | | --- | --- | --- | | Date | year + 年 + month + 月 + day + 日/号 | 9月13日 | | Clock time | time of day + hour + 点 + minutes | 下午三点半 | | Price | number + 元/块/块钱 | 三十块钱 | | Phone or reference number | one digit at a time | 138 0013 8000 | | Duration | number + 分钟/小时/天 | 十五分钟 |

The unit tells the reader whether means three o’clock, three yuan, three minutes, or the third day of the month.

If you are still building confidence with sentence-level output, begin with the English meaning and produce the whole line. That is the same meaning-to-Hanzi practice loop used for real messages, rather than a drill that only tests whether you can copy visible digits.

How to type Chinese dates naturally

Chinese dates usually follow a large-to-small order:

year + 年 + month + 月 + day + 日

So “September 13, 2026” becomes 2026年9月13日. In a more character-heavy practice sentence, you can also write 二〇二六年九月十三日. Unicode CLDR’s Chinese date data shows the same year–month–day order for the Chinese locale; in everyday digital writing, Arabic digits are also common and easy to scan. See the Chinese date and time chart when you need to check a formatted example.

Useful message patterns include:

  • 我们九月十三日见。 — See you on September 13.
  • 会议改到下周一了。 — The meeting was moved to next Monday.
  • 你的生日是几月几号? — What month and day is your birthday?

is a neutral written choice. is also common when people say a calendar date aloud, especially in casual conversation. Neither belongs after a clock hour: “at nine o’clock” is 九点, not 九号.

When typing a year in Chinese, read or practise it digit by digit: 2026二〇二六 or 二零二六. Do not turn it into 两千零二十六 when you are reading a calendar year in a normal Mandarin message.

Weekdays use the same pattern

Weekdays usually use 星期 or plus a number:

  • 星期一 / 周一 — Monday
  • 星期三 / 周三 — Wednesday
  • 星期日 / 周日 — Sunday

For an HSK 2–4 typing rep, combine the weekday with the action:

我们星期五下午开会。

Type the phrase from meaning, then check whether the weekday and time appear before the verb. This is more useful than memorizing a list of isolated weekday names.

How to type clock time without mixing up the units

Clock time normally uses:

time of day + hour + 点 + minutes

Examples:

  • 上午八点。 — 8 a.m.
  • 下午三点半。 — 3:30 p.m.
  • 晚上七点十五分。 — 7:15 p.m.
  • 现在是十点二十分。 — It is 10:20 now.

For “half past,” is a compact and natural choice: 六点半. For exact minutes, add : 六点二十分. In short chats, people also write 6:30 or 下午3:30. The important skill is recognising the Chinese sentence around the digits and producing the unit when you write it out.

小时 means a duration of hours, not a point on the clock:

  • 我学习了两个小时。 — I studied for two hours.
  • 我晚上八点学习。 — I study at 8 p.m.

The first answers “how long?” The second answers “when?” This distinction is a useful review target when a sentence looks almost correct but the message means something different.

How prices work in Chinese messages

The safest neutral pattern is number + 元:

  • 这个多少钱? — How much is this?
  • 这个三十元。 — This is 30 yuan.

In casual speech and messaging, or 块钱 is common:

  • 一杯咖啡二十五块。 — A coffee is 25 yuan.
  • 这本书多少钱?三十块钱。 — How much is this book? Thirty yuan.

You may also see smaller units:

  • or — one tenth of a yuan
  • — one hundredth of a yuan

So 三块五 commonly means ¥3.50 in a conversational context. If the amount matters, write the decimal or the unit clearly instead of relying on a shortened spoken form.

二 or 两 when you type a price

Both and represent “two,” but they are not interchangeable in every phrase:

  • 二十块 — 20 yuan
  • 两块钱 — 2 yuan
  • 两杯咖啡 — two cups of coffee
  • 第二天 — the second day

Use in place-value numbers such as 20 and 200, and learn common quantity phrases with . When your IME offers both candidates, the surrounding word is a reason to pause rather than accept the first result automatically.

Phone numbers, room numbers, and codes are different

Do not read a phone number as one large mathematical number. In Chinese, phone numbers and many reference numbers are normally spoken one digit at a time:

138 0013 8000一 三 八,零 零 一 三,八 零 零 零

When typing, Arabic digits are usually the clearest format. Add spaces or hyphens if they make the groups easier to read. If you need to say the number aloud, read each digit separately and ask the other person to repeat it when the line is noisy.

Room, order, and verification numbers use the same practical habit. A number like 305 in a room label is a reference, not automatically “three hundred and five.”

A reliable Pinyin IME workflow

On macOS, Apple’s Chinese Input Method guide lists Simplified Pinyin and Traditional Pinyin input sources. Windows provides Microsoft Pinyin, and Gboard supports adding a Chinese input language on mobile. The exact menus differ by device, but the learning loop is the same: type Pinyin, inspect candidates, and confirm the complete phrase.

Use this five-step routine:

  1. Read the English prompt and identify the number category.
  2. Say the Mandarin sentence quietly or recall its Pinyin.
  3. Type the entire phrase, including nian, yue, dian, fen, or kuai when appropriate.
  4. Check the candidate characters and the number unit.
  5. Read the final line once without looking back at the English.

For example, the prompt “The meeting is at 3:30 p.m. on Friday” becomes:

会议在星期五下午三点半。

The target is not a perfect speed score. It is noticing whether you forgot 星期, put 下午 in the wrong place, or selected a character with the right sound but the wrong meaning. The Mandarin sentence-typing guide explains why that full-sentence retrieval step is more demanding than selecting isolated vocabulary.

Eight short number drills

Hide the answers, type each sentence from the English meaning, and then classify your error.

  1. I will arrive at 9:10 tomorrow morning.
    我明天上午九点十分到。
  2. What day is the meeting?
    会议是几月几号?
  3. The class starts at 7:30 tonight.
    课今天晚上七点半开始。
  4. This ticket costs 45 yuan.
    这张票四十五块钱。
  5. I need two bottles of water.
    我需要两瓶水。
  6. Please send me your phone number.
    请把你的电话号码发给我。
  7. I waited for twenty minutes.
    我等了二十分钟。
  8. We will meet on September 13.
    我们九月十三日见。

For more varied situations, use the 20 real-message drills, then replace one number in each sentence. Changing 九点十分 to 八点半 tests whether you learned the pattern or memorized the line.

Common mistakes worth reviewing

Putting the date in English order

Avoid translating “September 13, 2026” word for word. Start with the year, then month, then day: 2026年9月13日.

Using 号 for a clock time

九月十三号 is a calendar date. 下午九点 is a clock time. The number is not the problem; the following unit is.

Reading a phone number by place value

Read 138 as three digits when it is part of a phone number. Do not automatically read it as 一百三十八.

Letting the IME choose 二 or 两

Candidate prediction is convenient, but it can hide a grammar decision. Check whether the number is part of a quantity, a place-value number, or an ordinal expression.

If this kind of recognition-to-output hesitation is familiar, the HSK 2–4 plateau guide offers a broader recovery routine. Numbers are a small but high-frequency place to practise the same output skill.

FAQ

Do I have to type Chinese number characters instead of Arabic digits?

No. Arabic digits are common in digital messages, especially for prices, dates, phone numbers, and codes. Practise both formats: digits plus Chinese units for real-world scanning, and Hanzi number words when the sentence requires character output.

When should I use 二 instead of 两?

Use in place-value numbers such as 二十 and in expressions such as 第二. Use before many measure words and quantities, such as 两个人, 两杯, and 两块钱. There are fixed expressions and regional preferences, so treat this as a high-frequency pattern list rather than a rule that solves every sentence.

Is 号 wrong for dates?

No. is common in spoken and casual date expressions, while is a neutral written choice. Both can appear in a date such as 九月十三号 or 九月十三日. Neither should replace when you are giving a clock time.

How should I type a phone number?

Use Arabic digits and keep the grouping readable. When reading it aloud, say each digit separately rather than applying Chinese place-value readings. If you are unsure whether you heard or another digit, ask the speaker to repeat the group.

A 10-minute number practice routine

Pick three categories each day: one date, one time, one price, or one phone/reference number. Type each from meaning, correct the unit, and create one transfer sentence with a different number. Review the old mistake before adding a new one.
